and are due severally to the reduction in the monthly fee

for the Opium Farm, to the difficulties experienced in the

first collection of Crown Rent in the New Territories on

a revised rent-roll, and to conditions unfavourable to the

sale of subsidiary coins. Heavy financial lesses that

during the year have been experienced by the Chinese ComTM

-munity are probably accountable for the decrease in the

returns from "Land Sales".

Services" the disbursement of arrears on account of the

Eastern Mail Subsidy on the one hand, and on the other,

expenses in connection with the claim of Messrs. Howard

and Stephens for compensation on account of Marine Lot

No. 184, are explanatory. The $37,428 excess Military Ex-

-penditure includes an overpayment of $34,493 which will be

deducted from the Contribution payable in respect of 1906.

Decreases generally are due to the prevalence of a high

rate of exchange throughout the year: on the item "Sanitary

Department" mere particularly to the Colony's comparative

immunity
